Opium Museum

Chiang Saen |
Itinerary:
We shall travel to Mae Chan 40km away, and uphill to visit Yao and Akha Hilltribe Villages. Continue up Doi Mae Salong to Santi Kiri KMT Yunan Chinese Refugee settlement, with its tea and coffee plantations and also a co-op store where homemade wines, medical herbs and other locally grown products are sold. The villagers are ethnic Chinese, descendents of KMT Nationalist Chinese army regiment that took refuge in Thailand almost 50 years ago when the Communist Forces won the civil war in mainland China. Doi Mae Salong enjoys a cool and refreshing climate all year round.
From here, we shall visit the Akha hilltribe at Lor Cha Village. Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
After lunch, we continue the drive to Mae Sai, the Thai-Burma trading border, to explore a local market that is famous for products from Southern China, Burma and Laos. We then proceed to the Golden Triangle where the tri-borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. Here, we enjoy an educational visit to the Opium Museum.
Finally, we continue our journey to the old capital of Chiang Saen, located on the steep bank of Mae Khong River opposite to Laos and dating back to AD 1260. There are some magnificent ancient ruins and temples here.
